On February 12 2007, Barcelona hosted the contest of mobile innovations Mobile Monday Global Peer Awards that was held within the largest annual international 3GSM World Congress which attracts thousands of mobile professionals from all over the world. 23 projects selected by local Mobile Monday Chapters competed for the title “The best innovation of 2006” in 3 nominations.
Young companies from Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Finland, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, Great Britain and Ukraine presented the new generation of mobile technologies and services – the very best!
One of the two winners of Mobile Monday Global Peer Awards in the Community Award nomination became the Loki project of Skyhook Wireless Company (Boston).
Skyhook Wireless Loki is the first application which automatically uses your exact physical location to enhance the power of the Internet. Search for directions, objects, etc. using Loki toolbar is based on a user’s physical location. By combining a unique ability to determine location with an easy way to navigate the Web, Loki makes Internet search more convenient and effective.
The Wi-Fi Positioning System (WPS) from Skyhook Wireless is the first outdoor positioning network to automatically pinpoint a user’s position utilizing Wi-Fi with accuracy within twenty meters. Exact location determination enables a user to easily take advantage of location-based services, and companies – to offer the most relevant services and products.
Advantages of WPS over Global Positioning System (GPS) are high speed of location determination (acquires a location in less than a second), reliability (WPS works inside or out) and price difference between GPRS and Wi-Fi Internet in favour of the latter.
During the last 3 years Skyhook Wireless has been successfully cooperating with QArea which took an active part in the development of the project-winner. QArea unites experts in software development for wireless devices and offers outsourcing services for companies in Western and Eastern Europe, Australia and the USA. The company is also one of the organizers of Mobile Monday in Ukraine.
Maybe in 2007 cooperation between Skyhook Wireless and QArea will result in another sensational innovation in the world of mobile technologies!
